Couples who seek therapy together can create dramatic change in their relationship. In my work with couples I have found that those who seek help early in their relationship are better able to manage the difficulties that often lead to bigger problems down the road.

For other couples, therapy is the last stop on the road to separation. I have no agenda for your relationship and will help you both decide what is best for each of you, whether that means staying together or deciding to go your separate ways.

My work with couples tends to be very interactive. I often assign homework for between sessions so that you can practice integrating change into daily life. We might also use role plays, journaling, and bibliotherapy to help you better understand one another.

Some common issues for couples include:

  • Communication problems
  • Divorce
  • Family of origin disagreements
  • Financial concerns
  • Parenting
  • Pre-marital counseling
  • Sexual issues

. . . and many more. If you and your partner would like to build a stronger relationship or just resolve an on-going argument, please contact me today and we can discuss how I can help you.

I see the engagement as a unique developmental phase that brings up differing issues for both men and women. Therefore, my goal is to not only address the surface disagreements, but to also uncover the deeper conflicts that arise during this important transitional time.

My work with couples preparing for marriage is some of the most rewarding work I do as a therapist. I believe it is necessary to have a direct, active approach with couples in this phase of relationship. As you contemplate making what might be the most important decision of your life, you may need some guidance in discussing questions such as:

  • What are my expectations about marriage?
  • How will my relationship with my parents change as a result of marriage?
  • Are my values compatible with my partner’s values?
  • How will household duties be divided/taken care of?
  • How do we resolve differences?
  • How much time do we spend together and apart?

In addition to preparing for your marriage, premarital counseling can help you to handle the major stress that comes along with planning a wedding. During such an intense time emotions run high, family expectations cause disagreements, and division of tasks can create resentment. Addressing these issues during your engagement will draw you closer as a couple and further prepare you for handling the difficulties you’ll encounter in married life.

I know this time is hectic for you, but I also believe that premarital counseling will truly contribute to creating a healthy, long-lasting relationship. I will provide a safe space to facilitate hard discussions and sharing of feelings. I can help you to understand each other better, even when you can’t come to an agreement.

During your intake session, I will meet with you to gather background information and together we will make a plan of treatment.
